In Cinemas. November 14, 2014 — More Dumber

It’s on weekends like this one when I seethe on the behalf of all movie lovers who are living in a “small market”.

Today—in bigger urban centres—people are getting to see new films such as Beyond The Lights, the Edward Snowden documentary Citizen Four, Tommy Lee Jones’ new western The Homesman, and Rosewater, Jon Stewart’s directorial debut.

And all we’re getting is one wide-release movie, Dumb And Dumber To. Ugh.

The appeal of the original Farrelly Brothers-directed comedy in 1994 baffled me. So much so that I was astonished when a prequel (not starring Jim Carrey or Jeff Daniels) was released in 2003 called Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. Now, 20 years since the original, we have a sequel.

It’s just not my kind of humour, but then what’s more subjective than what makes someone laugh? And I hear Jennifer Lawrence—famously a fan of the original movie—makes a cameo, for those who can’t wait one more week for the next Hunger Games instalment. Or maybe not.

So, with a broad comedy sequel the only new movie in cinemas, I encourage movie-goers to see Interstellar, which is provoking serious discussion about its various plot issues. People are still loving it, though. I had a great time at the IMAX presentation. I’d also recommend Nightcrawler, John Wick, and, with some reservations, Fury. And if you haven’t seen Gone Girl yet, it’s still playing in some cinemas locally.

Also, for those who love film AND food, check out Devour! The Food Film Fest, happening right now in Wolfville. Along with tasting and cooking events, there are screenings of docs about food as well as foodie dramas and comedies. Go here for more information.

Finally, I should mention that The Outlier Film Festival is just a couple weeks away, November 27-29. I’ll have more to report on it soon, but in the meantime, go here.
