In Cinemas: September 4, 2015 — A Walk In The Woods, Mistress America, The Transporter Refueled, Backcountry

I was mentioning last week that the end of August is a dumping ground for Hollywood, a time when the accepted wisdom is no one is going to the movies. They probably have the numbers to back it up, because this week Cineplex took that theory to heart, offering five days of Tuesday prices.

It’s like they’re begging us to go. “Please, please go the movies! We know its the dregs of the summer and Hollywood have given us nothing but crap these past few weeks, but it’s cheap! Just don’t forget to buy $13 popcorn!”

Friday is the last day to take advantage of the deal. I hope you decided to go see Mad Max Fury Road again as it’s reopened for some reason.

A Walk In The Woods opened Wednesday with barely a ripple. We’ve now reached the era where a Robert Redford movie opens and no one cares. That’s sad, isn’t it?

Here he stars in an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s book about how, after years living in the UK, he returned to the United States and hiked the Appalachian Trail with an old friend. I dig Bryson’s books and have always respected Redford. I guess at one time this project was supposed to star Redford and Paul Newman—how cool would that reunion have been? Nick Nolte is a pretty terrific substitute, mind you. And Emma Thompson? Love her a lot.

Also opening, Mistress America, the new quirky comedy from Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, who we all recall gave us Frances Ha. I appreciated how that film captured a certain urban ennui, and Gerwig was winning, but otherwise I found it a little overrated.

But I’m curious to see what she and Baumbach, whose While We’re Young I enjoyed in the spring, have brought to the table this time.

And it wouldn’t be Friday without an unwelcome reboot of a franchise we were happy enough to leave in the past. Recently we’ve had another Hitman movie, another Vacation movie, and now there’s The Transporter Refueled. This is a relaunch of the European car action movies originally starring Jason Statham. Now they’re featuring a dude named Ed Skrien, an actor who was briefly on Game of Thrones. I’m not sure how they decided he was the guy to get behind the wheel of this new model, but there you are. Believe it or not, a tag line in the trailer below is “This time, it’s personal.” At moments like this, I die a little.

Finally, something called Backcountry has opened, and this is a curiosity that may very much be worth your time, if the advance sizzle is anything to go by. It’s a horror, about a couple who get lost in the woods and hunted by a very hungry bear. It’s Canadian, and it’s also based on a true story. I’m not a camper, so bears don’t scare me. Might do you, though.

Backcountry might make a solid double feature with A Walk In The Woods, and then later maybe you’ll dream about Nick Nolte transforming into a bear and hunting Emma Thompson.

Happy Labour Day!
