30 Day Facebook Challenge (Jeff Edition) – Day 24 – Underrated Song

I’m not to sure where the following band lands on the overrated/underrated/properly rated scale, nor could I really begin to explain how one band/song is underrated, while another is overrated (on a big common scale) I hold true with the stance that music is just so subjective that it is almost impossible to say one band is one way vs the other simply due to the fact that everyone has different taste. So we can agree that on common ground the overrated/underrated argument is essentially a wash, but in one’s own little musical world, we have the ability to overrate and underrate the heck out of everything and anything.

With that being said, I feel that “Telegraph Road” by Dire Straits, is very underrated. From the beautiful, quiet opening that begins to lay the foundation for the next 13 minutes. Not only are Dire Straits fabulous musicians (you could argue that lead singer/guitarist Mark Knopfler is one of the best) but they had a brilliant understanding of how mesh epic musical masterpieces and soaring stories all into one.

Even though this song clocks in at just over 14 minutes at no point do I feel the need to switch tracks. The reason why I feel this song is underrated is due to the length of the tune. People more than gave it a chance, but in the world we live where hits are pumped out in under four minutes, this song never had a chance. In the infamous words of Billy Joel “…if you’re gonna have a hit, you gotta make it fit, so they cut it down to 3:05.”
