A New 30 Day Facebook Song Challenge :: Day 24 :: Underrated Song

This is the one category that had legitimately stumped me for a couple of days, I had to walk away and let it percolate, as I didn’t have an immediate answer. After sifting through my music collection on both my PC and on my phone, I think I came up with something that I’m happy with, but we’ll get to that in a moment. First, what constitues underrated? Was it something that didn’t get the attention you felt it warranted? Or was it something that did get some mainstream attention and was largely overlooked? Or was it something completely different? For me, I felt it was something that ended up getting little to no mainstream attention, which is one of the reasons I love writing about music is that I can share the gems that I discover along the way, and this is one of those gems, alright onto my pick for Underrated Song.

“Freaks and Geeks” by Childish Gambino is my choice, it’s a track off of his EP that was released back in 2011 to little mainstream attention, but for those that were fortunate to find this tune knew that it was something special. Childish Gambino put together a track that was head and shoulders above anything else coming out of the hip-hop scene and really started the ball rolling with his musical career (check out www.iamdonald.com to find out more about Childish Gambino) or hit up iTunes and buy a copy of Gambino’s “Camp” full length release.

As something of an aside, fans of the tv show Community will recognize Childish Gambino as Troy Barnes (aka Donald Glover), as funny as he may be in Community, he is an even better emcee. There are rumours that we may see a new EP in 2013, but until then go check out his EP or Royalty (which were both released for free) or pick up a copy of Camp. Gambino is highly recommended.
