Billy Joel – New York State of Mind

Making his first of two appearances on my NY list, Billy Joel pens a love letter to the city of his dreams. Soulfully professing his love for the Big Apple, Joel playfully travels from one end of the city to the other as if the trip were keys on his piano. But this song is all about feeling. Throw on your headphones and it’s easy to picture yourself in a sleazy jazz club, where the patrons drink their cheap whisky and smoke their Marlboro’s while the Piano Man plays his heart and soul out for tips.

Billy Joel has and will always be a true New Yorker and with this song he’s found the perfect way to honour his city.
