Colbie Calliat, Coco, Universal Music

Colbie Calliat (Calliat rhymes with Ballet) isn’t exactly what you’d call a household name, however the moment that her lead single “Bubbly” beings to flow from your speakers, you’ll more thanlikely be able to easily recognize the Joni Mitchell-meets-Jack Johnson sound. As you begin to dip deeper into Colbie’s Coco, elements of John Mayer will begin to present themselves. Calliat is one of the first artists to be discovered on Myspace and offered a major label contract and while expectations weren’t overly high for Coco, Calliat manages to easily outpace those very modest expectations. While the album doesn’t entirely live up to that warm summery vibe set by “Bubbly”, it’s an enjoyable listen. This isn’t an album that is going to revolutionize the genre, however it will prove to be an adequate time killer. The warm husky tones of her voice really help tracks such as “Tied Down” and “Midnight Bottle” reach their full potential.
