We’ve got so many gift options for lovers of cats, dogs, birds, horses and most animals you can think of on the Local Wishlist this year – in fact, we’ve got a whole section for Pets & Pet Lovers. But we’ve chosen a dozen of our favourites, that would be especially welcome under the tree of any true animal lover.
Not only does Lakeville’s Rescue Coffee offer organic fair trade coffee roasted locally in small batches, but 10% of their profits go to animal rescue organizations. That’s something any animal lover can feel good about.
As artist Katelyn Morse says, wolves represent loyalty, confidence, strength and unity. If you know someone who shares those qualities, this print of Morse’s original ink drawing would make a perfect gift.
The Sponsor An Animal program at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park provides supplemental care and maintenance for the animal of your choice (even Sam), and your gift will include a thank-you package full of keepsakes.
These charming wooden birds are carved and painted by 83-year-old Basil Doucette, Argyle Fine Art’s beloved senior artist. Basil’s birds are all unique, and would cheerfully perch anywhere, but you may want to keep them out of reach of the cats.
5. Small Farm Animal Paintings
These 4×4″ original paintings are by artist Susan Sweet, who captures the indefinable essence of cows, horses, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens on the canvas. You’ll find them at Made in the Maritimes’ Hydrostone and Bedford locations.
6. Sable Island Package
Horse lovers may never be able to visit protected Sable Island in person, but they can visit it virtually with this very special 2-day package from White Point Beach Resort. They’ll experience the island through the eyes of experts and artists, and proceeds support the Sable Island institute.
La-La Land Handmade makes these adorable coin wallets in a multitude of colours and prints, but these crows are a must-have for bird lovers. The wallets are hand printed with Leigh-Anne Hiltz’s original artwork, and would tuck nicely inside a stocking.
See the resemblance? Using a photo of the gift recipient’s pet, Hometown Pride creates a sketch of the animal, and once approved, prints it on a pillow for a unique gift. What pet lover wouldn’t appreciate this?
Instilling a love of animals can’t start too early. Celebrated artist and author Alan Syliboy’s vivid and colourful artwork brings Mi’kmaw culture and language to life in this baby board book, available at Nurtured.
We couldn’t resist adding another gift idea from La-La Land Handmade to this list, because what feline lover wouldn’t want to be part of this cat gang? These tshirts are selling fast, but if you can’t manage to grab one, those coin wallets are also available with the cat gang motif.
A little seasonal artwork, that they’ll want to keep up all year long. This sweet chickadee is from artist Tara Joy Andrews, and one look through her Etsy shop proves that she’s a hardcore animal lover herself.
More of those gorgeous Sable Island horses, in this annual offering from photographer Damian Lidgard, whose love of the island’s famous inhabitants shows in his work. You’ll find Lidgard’s Sable Island book and dozens of prints on his website as well.
