While visiting the Annapolis Valley, we met up with some of Drew’s (and now my) family for lunch at the Union Street Cafe (@unionstcafe). Located in Berwick, this conjoined cafe and pub captures your attention from the moment you walk in. The rooms are dimly lit (in a comfortable rather than creepy way). The colour pallet is made of soft greens, deep purples and dark, dark wood.
While waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, we took time to poke around the place, especially the Wick Pub side of the establishment. Though the pub was not in full swing while we were there (it was 11 am), all posters indicate that the Wick Pub is a good time. Signed posters of many musicians, local and national, lined the room, and a decent sized stage filled the back of the bar. For up-and-comers, there is an open mic each Friday (with free mussels for patrons).
Everything on the menu at Union Street Cafe looked great. It was actually one of those places where the menu has a few too many options, making it hard to settle. Fortunately for us, their special that day was a brunch where we were able to try a number of different menu items including standard breakfast fare, fishcakes, apple potato salad, and a chili Thai rice noodle. Lunch was accompanied by a bottle of local wine (all but one on the menu is local).
Both the food and drink prices were very reasonable, and the portions were large.
We had the good fortune of having excellent company, which may have swayed my favour for this bewitching little cafe from great to must-go. If you are in the area, it is a great spot to cool off with a drink and a bite to eat.
I would love to return to check out the Wick Pub when it’s in full swing some night. Do yourself a favour and try the fishcakes.
