The Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market is a gathering place for local food, art, and people. And while it’s often thought of as a place to meet and mingle while you shop for local goodies, it is also a place to learn a new skill.
Each month, The Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market holds community classes; affordable, one-hour lessons that range in topic from decor to raw food recipes, to watercolour painting.
Last month, they invited me to join them for their “Beginner’s Guide to Drawing With Watercolour”. Instructor and designer Jane Mason-Browne of Peachtree and Finch Graphic Design led the lunch hour session.
Eight of us gathered in the sunny space that once held the fish shop at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market to learn from Jane. We went around the table to introduce ourselves. There were a few locals, and a few visitors from Ontario who had heard about the class from friends.
Jane took us through a quick lesson in the materials and techniques used in watercolour painting, then invited us to give it a try. It was easier than I thought to repeat the techniques Jane taught us, but harder to make it look as impressive as the beautiful set of examples she brought with her.
It was fun to get my hands on, and try a new skill, plus the sun pouring in through the window mixed with the bright pallets of paint strewed across the table made it almost feel like spring.
Community classes are held twice a month, on the last Friday and Sunday. This month, the topic will be seed saving, a timely class for those of us starting to turn our minds towards gardening. It costs $5 to participate. View the event page with more details HERE.
More than 250 vendors sell local food and art at The Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market. Saturdays are the busiest day at the market, but it is open every day except Monday, making picking up local meat, veggies, cheese, and art, easy.
