When Drew and I were first dating we lived in a little apartment on Morris and Hollis. It was on the top corner of the Historic Farmers market, a one minute walk across a parking lot each Saturday. We started going for convenience. The Saturday market was closer than any grocery store. But after just our first week, it became a lot more than convenience. Farmers Market Lunenburg Nova Scotia

It was the best kind of date. A slow, lazy, Saturday morning picking out treats and fresh ingredients. We would get our spoils home, turn on some music, and spend the day cooking together, or sometimes for one-another. It formed the basis of our relationship and forged the course we are on now. There is a certain magic about local food. As my friend Chris said to me recently, local food is good on so many fronts. For the economy, for the taste, for the environment. But above all else, it always comes back to one thing above all else. Community. Lunenburg Market Nova Scotia Carrots

Local food has brought me far more than a better tasting dinner. It has connected me with great people. People like Chris. Chris and the Getaway Farm crew have been a game changer in the way we think about local food costs in our family. When we plan a week of food or a dinner party, Chris is often our first contact. He’s made buying great local meat affordable and fun by always helping us source within our budget and with our number of meals or guests in mind. He helped us plan our week’s worth of meals from a local chicken – a $100 week of local food that ended up lasting us two weeks. And now Getaway Farm and The Local Traveler are teaming up in an attempt to help you eat local and on a budget with a live demo, recorded videos, and a shopping list to get a week of local meals for a family of four on a budget. Open City: Getaway Farm Style!

On Saturday, May 10 at 3 pm we will be giving a live demo with the Getaway Farm crew at the Halifax Seaport Market as part of Open City. Ben, one of the amazing Getaway Farm staff will be showing me how to break down a whole chicken. I will be showing him how to use each part to make a meal. I’m not a chef, I’m just a regular, food-stressed person who sometimes feels like a total dunce in the kitchen. We want to show you how to make easy recipes on a budget using local ingredients that doesn’t require a crazy amount of kitchen prowess. To make it even easier, we are going to make a shopping list for you and record the process so that if you want to try it at home there won’t be much guess work.
