“But what’s an egg doing on there?”
My father looks a bit perplexed as he examines the menu at 2 Doors Down. He is talking about their Big Brunch Cheeseburger, the restaurants house ground beef burger, cheese, bacon, guacamole, tomato, and yes, a local free range fried egg to top it all off.
We are at 2 Doors Down for a duel birthday celebration. My mom and I have birthdays just a week and a day apart, so in recent years we’ve taken to celebrating them together. And my parents (in their new-found food bravery) have let me pick the restaurant.
They let me pick the restaurant a lot these days (it might have something to do with this blog). And since they’ve put their trust in me, I try to tread a careful line between exciting and conventional. So I’m doubting my choice as my dad stares at the menu and questions the egg.
“Eggs are great on a lot of things,” I say.
Then I start to list off as many unconventional things I can think of that I have plopped an egg on in the last few months. I come up with two.
My mom settles quickly on the salt cod fish cakes (she strongly approves of the use of salt cod). My sister decides to take her second ever stab at hollandaise sauce with a ham eggs benny (one of four on the menu). And with everyone else stepping up to the plate to order, my dad settles on the burger, egg and all.
I have been wanting to try 2 Doors Down for quite some time. It hasn’t hurt that my twitter feed has been filled with 2 Doors Down #BurgerWeek slider pics for the past week. And when an informal “where should I eat brunch” twitter survey turned out more than a few votes for 2 Doors Down, the decision was made.
We learn that there is free coffee and tea with every meal, a nice surprise. Let’s be honest, those $3 per cup charges at most restaurants really add up! Drew asks about the roast (of course). It’s a special roast from Java Blend.
They don’t skimp on the refills, either. Drew’s just barely sucked back the last drop from his first cup when a refill is at the ready. Impressed.
And then, the food arrives. My sister’s ham benny…
And my pork belly benny…
The big brunch cheeseburger…
Salt cod fish cakes…
And the full fry for Drew…
(Side note: Every single thing pictured was, or could be made, Gluten Free)
Drew lovingly feeds me a bite of each thing off his plate. The musrooms are my favourite thing of the whole spread, though the pork belly is a nice (but rich) treat. The beans are also delish.
We all clear our plates. There’s not a trace of what was a heavy yet satisfying brunch left behind. The table congratulates me on a choice well-made and I thank them in return for a birthday well celebrated. And while dad’s verdict is still out on the egg, we all agree we’ll be back.
