Hart and Thistle Closes Their Doors

Sad news, fellow craft beer lovers, Hart and Thistle is closing.

They made the announcement at 10 am today (February 19th) on their facebook page:

“We have valued and appreciated your patronage for 5 years, however we have made the difficult, and necessary decision to close Hart & Thistle Gastropub & Brewery effective February 19, 2014.

As long time supporters of local and independent business, we will continue to cheer on the city of Halifax and fellow members of the food service industry from the sidelines. Many reasons have lead us to this decision, however with the bulk of our business occurring inside the short summer season, coupled with large growth of independent restaurants in greater HRM, we ultimately noticed an impact to our bottom line that we could not overcome.

Much gratitude is extended to our dedicated management and crew, along with our family of suppliers.

Sincerely Bruce Keith Owner/Operator”

Damn. I was surprised to hear this one, especially after their big announcement two weeks ago that they would be starting to fill growlers, and had their own set of branded growlers on the way. Hart and Thistle was one of my favourite summer places to have a beer (or two) and work on their patio. I’m sad to see it go, especially with all of the recent growth in our local craft beer scene.

Their fantastic brewer, Greg Nash, also brews for Rock Bottom Brew Pub on Spring Garden, along with working as a consultant for a number of Nova Scotia breweries.
