@IlovelocalHFX launched the first ‘Open City’ event this weekend. Today and tomorrow, local retailers across the city have been invited to give discounts and deals on their products to local shoppers. The full list of discounts and retailers can be found on the I Love Local Halifax webpage, and is pretty extensive.
We woke up at 6:30 am to get a head start on the action. After reviewing the list, and a bit of early morning browsing, these are our top 5 picks to hit up during the first Open City weekend.
1. Sweet Williams (@SweetWilliamsNS):
Sweet Williams is a market must for us. Their sausage, smoked turkey and pepperoni have people lined up early every Saturday. For Open City, they are offering a ‘Mother’s Day Bundle”. For $5, you get 4 sausages and half a pound of bacon. We bought 4 packs.
2. Selwood Green:
Selwood Green is one of the permanent Seaport Market (@HFXSeaportmrkt) stands. We discovered them over the winter when their blog post (http://selwoodgreen.com) on their winter smoothie (containing local beets, carrots and apples) peaked our interest. Today and tomorrow they are selling a local organic blueberry smoothie for $2.
3. Saege Bistro (@Saegebistro):
Saege has two deals on today. The first is a deal on stuffed croissants from 12-5, followed by gourmet burgers from 6-9. They aren’t listing the price on I Love Local, but our interest was peaked when we found out that they would be featuring Trinity Gold Lemonade (@JoshNordin). Trinity Gold is a locally made lemonade concentrate and it is delicious. This secret family recipe has quickly become a staple in our house. If you can’t make it out today to try it at Saege, never fear! They sell during the summer at 4 markets across the province, including the Seaport Market each Saturday.
4. Museum of Natural History:
If you grew up in Halifax, you probably visited Gus the turtle as a child, or stopped in to uncover dino bones in the museums indoor sandbox. This weekend is the perfect time to get reacquainted. The Museum is offering free admission today and tomorrow.
5. Christina Martin Concert (@xtinamartin):
Both today and tomorrow, Christina Martin will be giving a free daytime concert down on Bishop’s Landing. This local musician is one of our favourites. To make things even better, Local Tasting Tours will be giving out free salted caramels at the show! Check it out today 10 – 1 and tomorrow 1-4.
