We know the feeling – that low-level panic that sets in when you don’t have everything checked off on your holiday shopping list, and it’s getting too late to order. Don’t worry! There are so many local gifts that you can still get, especially from the Local Wishlist. We’ve put together a little guide to help you finish that list, and many of these local gifts are still available right up until December 24th.
First off, we always say that experiences make great gifts. And even better – they’re available as tickets or gift cards, that you can buy even at the very last minute. You should head straight to our Travel & Experiences section for a great selection of memorable adventures. Our category sponsor is Neptune Theatre, and they have some really special gift offers this year, like dinner packages with local restaurants, or a fantastic price on a hotel/dinner/theatre combo. Or what about tickets to some much-anticipated upcoming shows? Check out their Musical 4-Pack for inspiration.
There are plenty of other experiences on that list that really stand out – a camping trip to Nova Scotia’s 100 Wild Islands, a hot air balloon ride across the Annapolis Valley, an off-the-beaten-track glamping adventure, winter surf lessons, a luxury afternoon tea. Cooking lessons, a seven-course meal or a wine tour would be a thrill for a foodie on your list. And how about a reiki session, yoga lessons or a little floatation therapy?
Our Home & Garden sponsors at Made in the Maritimes stocked so many items from the Wishlist this year, and they still have many left, at one or both of their two locations. You can pick up some great gifts at the very last minute, too – on Christmas Eve, their Bedford location in Sunnyside Mall is open 930am-5pm, and the Hydrostone shop from 10am until at least 4pm. Grab a few of those paper bag soaps to fill stockings!
Gift certificates to White Point Beach Resort would never go astray, and besides the bunnies and the breathtaking views, another drawing card would be the events they have lined up all year long. This winter, for example, they’ve partnered with Nimbus Publishing for a special Read-treat Getaway. And speaking of Nimbus, you shouldn’t have any problem finding their featured titles at local booksellers over the holidays, but if you want to order from their website, do it soon – most orders arrive within two days, but try to get your orders in before the 20th, to be safe.
Our friends at Discovery Centre always have gift cards available, and if you purchase a gift of membership by December 20th, you’ll get a bonus limited edition stuffie. And don’t forget about the Discovery Shop when you’re looking for last minute toys, games and puzzles – they’ll be open every day until 5pm from now up to and including the 23rd, but then closed for the holidays. You can head to Kept Gifts & Housewares on the 24th though – they’ll be open until 4pm on Christmas Eve, with a great selection of local gifts. And, they have 50% off all of their holiday decor starting today, so you can add some last-minute sparkle to your own home!
Beyond experiences, consumables make for great gifts as well, especially for the “they already have everything” people on your list. You should still be able to find most of the items in our Food & Drink section. Farmers’ markets are a good place to start, and if you’re in Halifax, check out The Shelf at Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market for a great selection—they stock items there even when the vendor can’t be at the market themselves, and can customize a gift box for you. Just make sure you get what you need this weekend—they’ll be open Saturday and Sunday until 3pm, and then closed for the holidays.
