The Dungeon Family might be based out of Atlanta, but they have certainly found a home for themselves here in Halifax. 2024 saw Killer Mike grace the TD Halifax Jazz Festival stage, and festival organizers followed that up with Big Boi (and Sleepy Brown) for 2025. This collective was home to some of the biggest names in Southern Hip-Hop, including Killer Mike, Outkast, Goodie Mob and TLC.
Outkast is a household name, with many folks having grown up with their music and tracks such as “Hey Ya!”, “Ms. Jackson” and “So Fresh and So Clean” being staples on many a mixtape. But after Andre 3000 and Big Boi reunited for a festival tour in 2014, the longtime collaborators parted ways, and Big Boi resumed his solo career, releasing Boomiverse in 2017. So when it was announced he was coming to Halifax, it raised a few questions, mainly what would the setlist be comprised of? Would it be mainly Big Boi’s solo work? Would we hear any of the beloved material from Outkast, and if so, what would it sound like without Andre 3000 by his side?
On the Thursday night of Jazzfest, Big Boi hit the stage with fellow Dungeon Family member Sleepy Boy, and the two proceeded to work through a set loaded with gems. These gems came from both Big Boi’s solo work as well as his time in Outkast and from the duo’s 2019 collab entitled Big Sleepover. It was an absolute treat to hear “Ms. Jackson”, “B.O.B.”, and “All Night” performed live in Halifax. Since we are now on the Dungeon Family radar, maybe in 2026 Janelle Monae makes her way to the city?
