In the two days that marked the transition from July to August, the fabled room in Hubbards known as The Shore Club played host to one of its most bombastic shows of the entire Summer.  Those two nights saw the duo of Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler (better known as Death From Above 1979) land on the Lobster Hall stage with two monster speaker cabinets that certainly rattled the rafters in the fabled room.   For those unfamiliar with DFA1979, they are a Bass and Drum duo who have carved out a niche for themselves, drawing influence from a myriad of genres and will never be pigeon-holed into any one singular genre.   They definitely bring the bombast with a heavy, aggressive sound, but flirt with both punk and heavy metal genres, never fully committing to either.  With all of that being said, the barrier to entry is minimal, as the songs are infectious and instantly recognizable. If any band were to be dubbed iconoclastic, it would be Death From Above 1979.

DFA 1979

For a band that has played much bigger rooms all over the world, it was an absolute must-see night in Hubbards. Knowing the power that Sebastien and Jesse have harnessed, it was an absolute fever dream to bring that experience to The Shore Club.   It was certainly a night to remember, especially since a few faces were melted clean off during the set.  It was a night that exceeded all expectations, with the band playing cuts from across the entirety of their catalogue.   The packed house was pumped to hear cuts such as “Romantic Rights”, “Caught Up”, “Trainwreck 1979”, and the closing track “Pull Out”.   For me, it was the first time being able to finally catch the band live, as I always seemed to miss them when they rolled through town, and I can’t wait to see these fellas again down the road.  I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible supporting act, Customer Service, who kicked off the evening with their energetic pop-infused tunes. It was the perfect way to get things started.  Thank you, Shore Club, for another night of incredible music in your wild and welcoming room.
