There are few acts that I’ve had the absolute pleasure of capturing more than Adam Baldwin & The Jenny Wren. I have been following Adam since he released his debut EP over a decade ago, and his deft songwriting won me over and solidified that fandom. A year has passed since Baldwin and his talented band graced the Light House stage, and in that time Baldwin has crisscrossed the continent on more than one occasion, playing alongside the beloved Alan Doyle, before embarking on a solo trek alongside bandmates Kendel and Zach.
During that time, Adam was hard at work crafting a new collection of songs that may feature in future recordings. The setlist over his three-night hometown stand comprised cuts from his latest album Concertos and Serenades alongside newer material such as “Western Star” and “Kings Pier Soiree”, which have been included in sets throughout 2024. The Halifax crowd also heard the story of Adam and the Jenny Wren
meeting, and befriending legendary Calgarian and wrestling superstar Brett “The Hitman” Hart, the very namesake of Baldwin’s track “The Hitman”.
It was another fantastic night of top-tier songwriting and wry self-deprecating humour that has become a hallmark of these shows. It was also nice to see Adam step out from behind his trusty keyboard, taking to the microphone with a guitar strapped over his shoulder, a nice return to his earlier days. As many times as I’ve been fortunate enough to see Adam perform, each show demonstrates continued growth and maturity. We’re all better off having Adam Baldwin writing and performing music in our world.
