Show Thoughts & Shots // Alan Doyle @ The Shore Club – 29.08.24

Alan Doyle

The Shore Club is quickly becoming one of the premier concert destinations for acts, as the stage played host to a couple of first-timers this year with Sloan and Alan Doyle. While Sloan hit the stage earlier in the summer, Alan Doyle was catching the tail end of August with a 3-night stint at the iconic Lobster Hall. While it was certainly cool to see Sloan in this space, the tickets for the former Great Big Sea front-man were quickly snapped up, selling out all 3 nights. So when the opportunity to capture some of that magic presented itself, it was quickly accepted.

It is hard to believe that Alan Doyle has never made his way down to Hubbards before these three nights, but that was the case. While Matt Mays has become closely associated with the venue, I can’t think of an act better suited for the space than Alan Doyle and his crew. Earlier this year Doyle played to his biggest crowd at the Scotiabank Centre down the road in Halifax; however, it was this much more intimate space that allowed the spirited Newfoundland frontman to truly turn these shows into proper kitchen parties.

The set for these three nights was jam-packed with equal measures of Great Big Sea tunes, traditional Newfoundland tunes, and Alan’s boisterous solo material. On the third of these sold-out nights, Doyle and his compatriots did not show any signs of slowing down, and the crowd was ranting and roaring alongside the gregarious Doyle, hoisting their drinks high in the air whenever Sociable was exclaimed. Hopefully, these three nights will be remembered as the first of many visits.

Thanks, Sonic Concerts, for having me out.
