Halifax Pop Explosion // Five MORE Acts to See // Part 2

I’ll just pick up where Jeff left off here.

Partner

Partner fucking rocks. In support of their first full length album, Partner are hard on the touring scene. Since playing Halifax twice last year (including Pop Explosion), they’ve since crushed the stages of Sappyfest, had major props in Exclaim! magazine, and made an appearance on the second flashiest dresser on Hockey Night In Canada’s Strombo show. Josee and Lucy love to be funny, and love to melt faces. Punk rock with a taste of AC/DC licks. This is definitely a show not to be missed.

Kirsten Olivia

Though limited in releases, Kirsten Olivia is nowhere near limited in talent. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing her during The Last Waltz Anniversary Show at the Marquee Ballroom last year, covering “Georgia On My Mind.” Anyone in the room that night will, without a doubt, be able to tell you who Kirsten Olivia is. Her voice has the sheer power of Aretha, and she has the stage presence and charisma of Whitney Houston.

Devarrow

Devarrow is a singer/songwriter based out of Halifax and is the current artist-in-residence at Casino Nova Scotia. His sound can be compared to that of Shakey Graves, if I have to put any kind of comparison on it. An acoustic guitar, a kick drum, a harmonica, and his voice are his weapons of choice. When competing for artist-in-residence at Casino Nova Scotia, he was forced to follow some loud and energetic acts such as Floodland and T Thomason. It boggled my mind that one guy with an acoustic guitar and a kick drum could match the energy and talent of the other full-electric bands.

Weaves

Fast paced, feedback-laced punk-pop sounds bellow from the amps when Weaves take the stage. Fresh off their release of Wide Open, we are privileged enough to experience the energy that they put down on the record translate to the stage. It’s a mishmash of dancing and rocking, so maybe take your leather jacket AND your dance shoes just in case.

Kurt Braunohler

“But you’re a music blog, you can’t talk about comedy” – You. Well, the jokes on you (see what I did there), because this is my piece and I’m frigging doing it.

Pop Explosion has been incredible at finding comedic talent that the masses may not know about. Although Braunohler has appeared on The Kroll Show, Bob’s Burgers, Conan, The New Girl, Drunk History and a whole butt load of others, his name might not be on the tip of your tongue. He has two hour-long specials out, that take the mundane, and make them insane. He’s topical, yet silly. Take an extra pair of undies, you may pee the first.
