Two Words: Vance Joy

Hey, remember that time Vance Joy came to Halifax in February? I do. It was one of those evenings in my life that I needed so badly. I am forever indebted to anyone who helped pull this show together, and bring it to us in the bleakest part of our winter.

So amazing.

However, I feel like we might need to discuss our audience behaviour after reviewing this clip. I know we are a very polite audience. I love going to the Cohn for this reason. Fancy ushers show me to my seat, I get to sit down and listen to amazing acoustics, and just soak it all in – in a very polite, respectable manner. If I wanted a rowdy, fan-screaming time, I would just walk down to the waterfront and follow the “Social-Able!” chants. Frankly, I feel too old and weary from my damn kids for that foolishness right now. (Anyhow, I digress.)

I may have started to develop a complex about our audience etiquette when I started to watch other show clips from the Fire and Flood Tour.

This is Montreal a few nights before he came to Halifax:

And here is Massey Hall in Toronto a few nights before that:

In Halifax’s defense, we did have two women that were in the front row standing and dancing. And we had someone yell, “Take off your shirt” at one point, I think. Listen, we had the potential to be a bad ass audience, we just chose not to be. I also think that we (well, at least I) wanted to distinguish ourselves from the pop Taylor Swift audience to the more indie-folk audience. Maybe if the concert was in the summer we would have Tay-Tayed all over Vance Joy.

In all honesty, I am really glad that we all sat and listened to this un-freaking-believable show. I appreciated that I could just sit and absorb the sensual (mainly my hearing and vision senses) experience. It was as close to a sober acoustic heaven as I have ever encountered. I just hope that Vance Joy and his band know that deep down inside we were screaming, and swaying, and singing along. We were just a respectable audience, caught in the middle of winter, frankly in shock with the awesomeness of the supernatural entity of that which is called Vance Joy.

This was from the first show on the tour in Vancouver in the beginning of January.

Vance Joy and his band just finished their four month tour in Australia last week. And now, they have just released a FREE live album (as a thank you?!?!) which is a collection of recordings from the very long and winding road. Check it out.

Seriously, this guy had me at “I’m a dog lying down on a warm bit of pavement”.
