Gloryhound, Loaded Gun, eOne Music Canada
Earlier this year Gloryhound released their long-awaited full length album “Loaded Gun” which is the sophomore follow-up to their 2009 debut album Leave It Alone. In those three years between albums, there was also the Electric Dusk EP released in 2012 which kept audiences primed with singles such as “TKO Tokyo” and title track “Electric Dusk”.
Fans may have been clamoring for a new Gloryhound record for the two years between the EP and Loaded Gun, but they were well compensated when the album finally dropped back in June. This album is a straight-ahead serving of crunchy guitar driven rock. The
title track has been garnering solid air play on rock radio and easily accessible to those unfamiliar with the sounds of these 4 lads from Halifax. This album is nothing if not accessible. It’s an album of radio friendly tracks any of which could be easily added to a couple of different stations in the city (“Sarah Ann”, “Set It On Fire”, “Let You Down Again” for example).
When I first worked my way through the 11 tracks, I immediately noticed the slick production and a sound which reminded me of 80’s era rock radio (Alice Cooper specifically) which found a way to seamlessly merge a thick layer of crunchy guitar and vocals into a sound which felt quite pop influenced. With each subsequent spin, the album continued to grow with each listen and is one of the best albums to come out of these parts in 2014. For a band that has a similar history to that of Matt Mays and El Torpedo , Loaded Gun will be album which will go towards helping Gloryhound achieve the same sort of trajectory. I can’t wait to see what the band has planned next.
