The Eight-Track: Ear Worms

I present you with the latest installment of the Eight-Tracks.  The theme this week is a group of new tracks which have caught my ear recently and have since been unable to shake.  Enjoy!

1. “Miss Jackson” – Panic! At the Disco

Something is afoot in the Fueled by Ramen camp, 2013 appears to mark the return of PATD label-mates Fallout Boy, in addition to a resurgence for Panic! At the Disco.  The lead single from the forth coming album Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! “Miss Jackson” seems to borrow the same formula of fusing rock-soul-pop which results an incredibly catchy, radio friendly tune which I expect to blow up over the coming months once radio latches on to it. It’s also fitting that Panic! At the Disco will be hitting the road later this summer in support of Fallout Boy, if this lead single is any indication, it’s a natural fit.

2. “Bad Company” – Five Finger Death Punch

This tune will draw a lot of comparisons to Metallica and their cover of Whiskey In The Jar, but regardless of them both being covers, FFDP’s cover of Bad Company’s “Bad Company” actually improves upon the song.  This is a tune that will certainly be added to my running playlist as it’s a tune loaded with aggression.

3.”Royals” – Lorde

I have a feeling this track may be somewhat polarizing, but be that as it may, it’s super catchy and it sank its hooks into my ear canals earlier this week and it still has yet to let go.  Take into account that this chick is only 16!! It’s a pretty interesting track about the realization that she’ll never be Royalty.

4. “Elephant” – Tame Impala

We may not have figured out Doc Brown’s Delorean yet, but look no further than Tame Impala’s “Elephant”.  This is a funky psychedelic odyssey which will transport you back to the 60’s.  It sounds like something you’ve heard before, but it’s a refreshing change of pace from the music that the current generation of artists has been creating.

5. “Do I Wanna Know?” – Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys are really starting to quite literally find their groove with their latest single “Do I Wanna Know?”, they have managed to find a way to fuse the thick retro rock of their previous album with the scrappy pop rock feel of their debut.  This is the perfect marriage of the two styles and the end result is this very laid back track which just bubbles and brims with that seething aggression heard in recent releases.

6. “Wild Child” – Brett Dennen

It makes me immensely happy when I look for an older track by an artist and discover they have new material on the way.  This is the brand new single from Mr. Dennen, it’s an interesting twist on his sound as he’s incorporating a country lilt to his sound and it just works so bloody well.  This is a track for those warm sunny days.  Hopefully people start to embrace this tune.  Think of him as the more interesting Ed Sheeran.

7. “Ways to Go” – Grouplove

Alt Nation has been on blast the past week and this is a tune they’ve been pumping directly into my ear canals, and my brain thanks the Satellite DJ’s a great deal.  This is a wonderful slice of modern pop-rock with has elements of 90’s pop sensation Savage Garden (don’t hold that against Grouplove). This is also from their forthcoming disc Spreading Rumours due out in September.

8. “Super Soaker” – Kings of Leon

They’rrrrrrrre back!  The most volatile group this side of Oasis, Kings of Leon have returned with more of their sun drenched ear candy.  “Super Soaker” is the lead single from the forthcoming Mechanical Bull if this single is any indication, it’s going to be another stellar release from The Kings.
