Blind Melon’s “No Rain” bothers me…

I remember when I personally discovered Blind Melon, I was flipping through the channels and up popped a bunch of mud encrusted hippie musicians singing the lead single (” I Wonder”) from their eponymous album. It was this great blend of crunchy guitars blended with these sweet melodic harmonies. You’d almost think this was a side project from Chris Barron (think Two Princes”), but it was this unknown band from California called Blind Melon.

It wasn’t until the arrival of the infamous Bee Girl and the video for “No Rain” this super catchy tune which still graces the airwaves at least once a week. It’s the song Blind Melon are known for and frankly that’s a shame. The song is this fluffy pop tune that won’t implore anyone to dig into the depth of either Blind Melon’s debut or sophomore albums, which is why it bothers me. This is a band that is far more than “No Rain”, just go listen to “Seed to a Tree”, “Time” or “Holyman” from their debut, or songs like “Dumptruck”, “Lemonade” or “Car Seat (God’s Presents)” and from those 6 songs an entirely different picture is painted, which is far more than Bee Girl’s ode to the sun.

When you get a chance, toss on some Blind Melon and let me know what you think.
