A New 30 Day Facebook Song Challenge :: Day 25 :: Best Vocals

This should be interesting, as I’ve always been a guy who writes about music by way of how it makes me feel, as opposed to how technically sound an artist or band is. I could easily scribble down a few words on why Mariah Carey, or Celine Dion have the

“Best

Vocals” but that would be entirely disingenuous of me, wouldn’t it? Fortunately, that isn’t how I do things, and the best vocals for me come from an artist whose career spans 5 decades, countless records and is instantly recognizable, there aren’t many who fall into this category and luckily I’ve had the opportunity to see this person twice, once with his famous backing back and once on his own and both times he kicked my ass thoroughly.

Without further ado, my pick for Day 25: Best vocals goes to…… “Old Man” by Neil Young. The great irony about this tune is that Neil wrote it in his early 20’s and when he breaks it out today, it feels as fresh as it did back then. The vocals here are pure Neil, you hear any Neil Young tune and you know instantly that who is singing (the only exception I can think of is “Horse With No Name” by America, which sounds like Neil, but isn’t). He’s not tied to one generation, or country specifically, but his impact is far reaching from artists such as David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Eddie Vedder and pretty much any Can Con rock act you can think of . It’s not necessarily pretty by traditional standards, but listen to any of Neil’s work and it’s gold Jerry, Pure Gold!!
