A New 30 Day Facebook Song Challenge :: Day 23 :: A Song You Can’t Listen to Without Singing

When I initially looked at the challenge for Day 23, I couldn’t think of a single track that I felt fit the bill, that is until I started driving around by myself on the weekend and on came The Verve Pipe’s “The Freshman”. This was a big tune back in the early 00’s and I will belt this tune out whenever it comes on, it’s one of those bittersweet alt-rock tunes that wants to be a ballad, but is too much of a downer to get there. But really, what’s not to love about this track? The verse (shown below) is brilliant:

For the life of me I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise
For the life of me I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

It’s this wistful look back over that enthusiasm and self-importance that most Freshman have, and it’s not until we look back and realize the folly of our ways, but it’s another of those great mellow tracks that just demands you belt out the words (even if you’re making up half of them as you go). It’s not on all that often these days, but this Verve Pipe gem is the one that gets me signing each and every time.
