A supernatural mystery/break-up drama from New Brunswick isn’t something we get a chance to see every day. This first feature from filmmaker Martinez got into TIFF, and it’s easy to see why. There’s some interesting ideas in the non-linear story, the tale of a couple, Olive (Caroline Bell) and Benny (Ian Ottis Goff) who start to experience the fracturing of memory and strange things happening around their home — disappearing and appearing items of furniture, fridge magnets counting down, the suggestion of an alternative timeline, alternative lovers — as we flash back to scenes from their relationship.
The melancholy tone and well-conceived patchwork quilt of reality owes a debt to The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but how many portraits of a relationship even approach that kind of pathos? If the domestic drama sometimes feels stagey, the performances win out. This is a solid calling card for a first-timer, and for the cinema of our neighbours to the west.
