OutEast Queer Film Festival starts Thursday

Running in Halifax from Thursday, June 16, through Sunday, June 19, is the 2016 edition of the OutEast Queer Film Festival, a collection of film screenings and events exploring and celebrating LGBTQ culture.

This year’s fest highlights include the opening night film, a documentary called Major!, the story of a longtime champion for trans rights and her fight to help trans people of colour in the US penal system. Another doc that looks promising is Kiki, about LGBTQ youth in New York City, thriving and performing. And the feature First Girl I Loved and French period drama Summertime.

If you go here you’ll see the full list of documentaries, features, shorts, and events taking place over the next four days.

When the terrorists attacks took place in Brussels in March, we had coincidentally programmed a Belgian comedy at Carbon Arc that week. It felt right to celebrate the art, storytelling and laughter of that culture. It felt like one of the best things we could do. This week, I encourage anyone to see a screening or go to an event at OutEast, and celebrate the art and storytelling.
