DesBarres Manor Inn – Guysborough

The DesBarres Manor (desbarresmanor.com) is a grand early 19th century inn located in Guysborough.  Historic, luxurious and comfortable, it is the crown jewel of Authentic Sea Coast’s (@AuthenticCoast) family of attractions, which are all in a two block radius, including the Rare Bird (brew) Pub and Skipping Stone Cafe featuring Full Steam Coffee, kayaking and Harbour Belle Bakery.

Set in a historic home from 1837, DesBarres is best described as stately and welcoming.  Throughout the inn you’ll find original artwork and antiques, high ceilings, draped staircases and intoxicating scents. There is a dining area filled with chandeliers and antique cutlery and a comfortable parlour room where you can socialize with other guests, play a game on their oversized backgammon board or enjoy a Rare Bird Ale at the bar.

Just off the dining room, you’ll find a huge wrap-around deck and gazebo.  At night, the area is softly lit with pixi lights.  @DrewMooreNS and I spent a whole afternoon under the gazebo during a rainstorm, curled up with books, laptops, wine and dark chocolate.

Each guest room is unique, but consistent in their luxury.  We stayed in the Wolfe Room on the second floor.  The room had a king-sized bed with a beautiful solid wood headboard and marble topped posts.  It also has a sizeable sitting area with an overstuffed sofa and large red chairs.  As if that wasn’t enough space, the bathrooms are extra large with clean white furnishings, a deep tub, great water pressure and lots of toiletries (4 bottles each of mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner and moisturizer, a vanity kit, sewing kit and shower caps).

The Inn prepares a four course dinner each night.  Dinner is included with some of the room packages, or you can add it onto your stay.  You can read more about dinner at DesBarres Manor Inn here.

Every room night comes with breakfast, an adventure in taste all it’s own.  We had light, fluffy frittatas, smokey bacon, stewed blueberries, toast, juice, and home roasted and brewed coffee. There is a nearby waterside walking trail, perfect for a sunset stroll.

DesBarres Manor Inn is open year round, though it closes select nights during the winter months so make sure to phone ahead.  We were there in September but this recent cold weather has me dreaming of the warm beds, comfortable sitting area and knock-out menus.  It would make for a great winter escape, or a Valentine’s Day treat for your special someone.
