What I Learned About Food in 2014

Sobeys invited me to write a guest post for their ‪#‎BetterFoodForAll‬ blog leading up to ‪#‎GivingTuesday‬. For the first year, FEED NOVA SCOTIA is partnering with Sobeys for “Giving Tuesday”. Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is the unofficial kick off to the charitable giving season.

So I wrote about what I learned about food in 2014.

I learned a lot about food this year. Though I consider myself an avid food eater, food lover, and sometimes food-writer, 2014 taught me how little I know about food. How we get it. How we make it. How we make sure everyone has enough.

I knew about FEED NOVA SCOTIA. Since I was a kid, I have donated cans, money, and time when called upon to do so. But I never really thought – REALLY thought – about who was on the other end of those donations, or the overarching problems FEED NOVA SCOTIA was trying to address. I didn’t understand what it was like to be food insecure, or the many and varied factors that come into play when it comes to feeding ourselves… (More)

I hope you’ll head over to the Better Food For All blog to read my piece on lessons in food and FEED NOVA SCOTIA’s role in the complex equation that is food security, but far more importantly I hope you’ll send a donation FEED NOVA SCOTIA’s way today.  Donations can be made online at feednovascotia.ca, by calling 902-457-1900, or in person at 213 Bedford Highway in Halifax.
