So remember back in May when I shared my video on how to make Apple Blossom cookies, and I was so stoked about the branches packed with beautiful apple blossoms?

Apple Blossom Sugar Cookies - I Say Nomato
…. yeeeeahhh… those are all apples now.

The best kind of apple. You know, the one that crunches when you bite into it, and the juice runs down your arm. Not too sweet. Not too sour. Those ones.

Our trees are PACKED.  One of my favourite things to do with them (besides this recipe for the best Apple Crisp you will ever make) is to make applesauce. I found this fantastic Easy Crockpot Applesauce recipe from the Frugal Girls probably four or five years ago, and it really is just so easy I’ve stuck with it, adapting it a bit every time I’ve used it.
This recipe could not be easier. Peel and core your apples slice them into chunks, no need to be too picky about their size! Pour your other ingredients over the top, and set your Crockpot to low.

The longest four hours of your life. You know, they try so hard to replicate that ‘fall’ smell. Apple pie candles, pumpkin spice air freshener, Turkey dinner in a box… but nothing can quite get it right. How can you possibly capture the smell that will be filling your kitchen while this is cooking? Apple… cinnamon… nutmeg… ginger… and your windows are open and that cool, sweet, salty air blowing in from the water… nope, they can’t do it!

After four hours, the apples will be soft. Now, you can use a potato masher if you love a chunky applesauce (or have the forearm stamina of a shot-putter). I do not, so immersion blender it is!
So smooth, so easy, and none of the preservatives that you find in store-bought applesauce.
Caveat: if you take this with you in your lunch bag, make sure that your container is water-tight. My lunch bag still smells like this applesauce 2 weeks after I washed it! (Not complaining.)
And honestly, it doesn’t make so much that it will go bad before you eat it (always my worry!).

Course: Snack
Servings: 4 -5 cups
Author: Cristina
Ingredients
  • 9 medium apples , peeled, cored and roughly chopped into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp each cloves , nutmeg, ginger, & all-spice
  • OPTIONAL: sugar to taste (~1 tsp) if the apples are a little sour
Instructions
  1. Dump your chopped apples into a crockpot.
  2. Pour the water and vanilla over the apples.
  3. In a bowl, mix the cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger and all-spice, and evenly spoon over the apples.
  4. Cover and set crockpot to low. Cook for 4 hours.
  5. When finished, apples should be very soft and mushy. If you like chunkier applesauce, mash with a potato masher. If you like your applesauce smoother, use an immersion blender until smooth.
And the apples aren’t over! Still need some great ideas? No fear, it’s Apple Week! All week long, my friends and I are sharing our apple-related projects, food and otherwise. You’ll be getting another #appleweek recipe from me tomorrow, can’t wait to share it with you!
