Grady, A Cold Cup of Poison, Warner

You must have been living under a rock for the past decade to not know of Big Sugar and/or its front-man Gordie Johnson. Big Sugar has shredded speakers right across this great nation of ours withtheirblend of reggae infused blues rock. In 2004 duetoadispute with the CRTC, Johnson disbanded Big Sugar and headed south to Texas and formed Grady (alongside fellow canuck Ben Richardson and recent addition American Billy Maddox) not long after. In 2005 Grady’s debut Y.U. So Shady?, was released to minimal fanfare, even while featuring a cover of the Big Sugar tune “Hammer in My Hand”. Johnson and Co have returned with the sizzling red-hot A Cup of Cold Poison. While Grady bears a lot of similarity to Big Sugar, the Reggae vibe has been jettisoned in favor of a harder more refined texas-blues rock sound. Johnson’s smoky ‘I’m cooler than you’ vocals are buried deeper into the mix than was previously the case. Fans of Big Sugar should feel right at home.
