The Streets, A Grand Don’t Come For Free, Vice/Atlantic

To say A Grand Don’t Come For Free is an acquired taste is a understatement. North American hip-hop is based primarily on a fusion of rap and r&b, rather than the UK amalgamation of electronica and hip-hop. The odd cadence of The Streets is somewhere in the vicinity of spoken word, and is backed by a sparse and oddly fitting production (think DJ Shadow). Check out “Fit But You Know It”, one of the few accessible tracks on this sophomore release from The Streets. But being hailed as the next big thing is no guarantee of success.
