In Cinemas: July 8, 2016 — Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates, The Secret Life of Pets, Sultan, Swiss Army Man

Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates is a formula mainstream comedy, but it won me over despite my resistance. It’s The Borg of summer releases. For a few more of my thoughts on the film, go here.

It’s right there in the title: The Secret Life of Pets tells us what cats and dogs do when we’re not around. Sleep a lot, I’ll bet. Lick themselves.

An Indian film called Sultan is opening in Bayers Lake. It’s a sports drama about a wrestler. I went looking for a trailer online with English subtitles, but no luck, which surprises me. Surely more folks than just those who speak Hindi might be interested in this, right?

Then there’s the deeply odd Swiss Army Man, a different kind of bro comedy, with Paul Dano as a dude finding a corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) who he kind of falls in love with. It’s adorable, while being very gross. It’s also problematic in other ways. For my full review, go here.
