In Cinemas: Friday, February 12, 2016 — Heart Of A Dog, Five Cassavetes films, 45 Years, Deadpool, Zoolander 2, How To Be Single, Nina Forever

At Carbon Arc on Friday night we’re showing Heart Of A Dog, a documentary by iconoclast musician and artist Laurie Anderson, a meditation on death and the life of her dearly departed dog, Lolabelle. For more information, go here.

The Kazan Theatre Company is hosting a mini- John Cassavetes Film Festival this weekend, including Shadows, A Woman Under The Influence, Faces, and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. If you haven’t ever seen any of the proto-indie American filmmaker’s work, now’s your chance. Go here for the specifics.

In at The Oxford is 45 Years, the British drama featuring Oscar-nominated actor Charlotte Rampling. For my detailed thoughts on the film, check out my review.

A Marvel movie opens this weekend, one from the 20th Century Fox branch, the studio that also does the X-Men movies. It’s called Deadpool, and is notable for a few reasons: The character, a masked assassin, has always been a very self-aware, jokey fellow, frequently breaking the fourth wall in the comics. He does the same thing in the movie, with Ryan Reynolds in the lead. This is also the first R-rated Marvel movie. We’ll see how all that goes over.

Ben Stiller is back with his fashion industry satire, 15 years after the original. I know people who loooove Zoolander, so I’m sure they’ll be thrilled with this sequel, Zoolander 2. It also stars Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, and Penelope Cruz.

It’s Valentine’s Day on Sunday and this year we’re actually getting a romcom, called How To Be Single. At least I think it’s romcom… it could just be a gross-out comedy with ladies.

Nina Forever is being sold as a horror comedy, where it’s neither entirely a horror or a really a comedy. It’s more a relationship drama with supernatural elements. For my review, go here.
