Local jam legend returns to Downtown Halifax: Kevin Head at Bearly’s, Sat. Oct 18

If you were in with the Halifax music scene in the 70’s and 80’s, you knew about Ginger’s Tavern. Owned by the now-owner of Granite Brewery Kevin Keefe, Ginger’s was a downtown hub for live music and imbibery for 35 years (Granite was born at Ginger’s). It was also a hot spot for open mic, where Keefe would reward musicians for taking the stage with free pints.

Kevin Head, who has been living and working as a musician in Ontario for the last several years, was original open mic host and regular performer (and upstairs apartment tenant) at Ginger’s. His return today with fellow Gigner’s alumni Steve Naylor, Ritchie Richmond, Patrick Ellis and other friends will transform Bearly’s into the legendary Ginger’s for a night.

“People in Nova Scotia can make a party out of anything. That’s something I love about being back here,” says Head. “Playing with the guys again, these great musicians, it’s a Ginger’s reunion.”

Head credits Ginger’s, and especially Keefe, for getting him and many local musicians started in their careers. “Kevin gave a lot of people jobs,” says Head. “All kinds of people got their start doing Ginger’s open mic. Kevin gave them work, he really nurtured music in those days. It led to a lot of jam sessions and parties over music.”

Those who want to experience (or relive) the Ginger’s atmosphere should head to Bearly’s today at 4pm — a great way to spend some time and have a few drinks before you head out to Nocturne tonight.
